HISTORY

Michael McIlroy built the Greenpoint at Milk & Honey in 2006 as a variation on the Brooklyn, swapping the maraschino for yellow Chartreuse and keeping Punt e Mes as the vermouth. The Chartreuse brings honey and alpine herbs to the rye, and the two bitters — Angostura and orange — keep it from drifting sweet. Like the Red Hook it is named for a Brooklyn neighbourhood.

SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS
  • It sits at the centre of a small family of Brooklyn riffs — Red Hook, Greenpoint, Bensonhurst, Cobble Hill — that modern bars treat as a set.
VARIATIONS & RELATIVES
  • Greenpoint with a cherry instead of a twist
  • Bensonhurst (bourbon and Cynar)
ANECDOTES

“Yellow Chartreuse is the sweeter, lower-strength of the two Chartreuses, which is why the drink needs both bitters.”
